Small mobile shop in traditional tent is set up in the yard of Soviet Era Housing Complex in Aktau.
Unlike most other Caspian port cities, which date back hundreds of years, Aktau is a new city, built in 1963 when crude oil was discovered in the middle of the steppe. The Soviet legacy is prominent - City streets have no names and all addresses in Aktau consist of three numbers: the micro district (block) number, the building number and the apartment number.
Aktau is Kazakhstan's only seaport on the Caspian Sea. It is also the Sea's most modern port.
